Alumna presents contemporary art in Ghana on April 4

Alumna and director of the University of Florida’s Harn Museum of Art, Rebecca Nagy, Ph.D., will visit Georgia Southern on Tuesday, April 4, to discuss her research of the rapid transformation of Ghana’s contemporary art scene into a cutting edge phenomenon in the international art world at 5 p.m. in the Arts Building room 2071.

“On the Cutting Edge—Contemporary Art in Ghana” will examine the various catalysts for change such as innovative academic curricula, social activism, digital networks, commercial venues, private collections, artists, critics, and theorists.

“Having Dr. Nagy visit Georgia Southern will be a real honor,” says University Gallery Director Jason Hoelscher. “Her breadth of knowledge about art across multiple eras and in a global context should offer our students a lot to think about. Like the political and economic worlds, the art world has undergone dramatic changes in recent decades, so to have such a well-versed and well-traveled guide as Nagy to talk about some of these changes and their consequences constitutes a real opportunity.”

Nagy has been director of the Harn Museum of Art since 2002. Under her leadership the museum added an 18,000-square-foot wing for contemporary art in 2005 and a 26,000-square-foot wing for Asian art in 2012. Nagy has curated exhibitions and published articles and exhibition catalogues on medieval, contemporary and African art.

Prior to her appointment as director of the Harn, Nagy spent 17 years as an educator and curator at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, North Carolina. She received her bachelor’s in studio art and art history from Georgia Southern and her master’s and Ph.D. in art history from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
