Rapper and hip-hop producer ‘Big Rube’ to give talk on April 20

Atlanta rapper and hip-hop producer Ruben Bailey, also known as “Big Rube,” will take the stage on Georgia Southern University’s Statesboro Campus on Friday, April 20, to speak about hip-hop pedagogy and the influence of southern culture on the hip-hop industry. The lecture is a part of the Jane Page Lecture Series and will take place in the Information Technology Building, room 1004.

With more than 20 years experience producing and performing, Big Rube is a trusted source in the hip-hop industry. He’s a first-generation member of the landmark Dungeon Family hip-hop collective and R&B group Society of Soul, and has produced for OutKast, Bubba Sparxxx, Goodie Mob, Killer Mike and Witchdoctor.

In 1996, Big Rube appeared on the Red Hot Organization’s compilation CD, “America is Dying Slowly,” alongside Biz Markie, Coolio and Fat Joe, among others. The CD, meant to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic among African-American men, was heralded as “a masterpiece” by The Source magazine.

The Jane Page Lecture Series was created by College of Education (COE) professor emerita Jane Page, Ed.D., who served the college for 26 years. Upon her retirement in 2005, Page created the Jane A. Page Distinguished Lecture Fund to provide an opportunity for the Department of Curriculum, Foundations and Reading to host a lecture series. The fund allows COE students and faculty to hear from notable professionals in the field of education.

This lecture is also supported by the Georgia Southern Center for Africana Studies and the Department of Political Science and International Studies, as well as Meritt & Meritt Law Firm.
