Georgia Southern to host STEM camps this summer

In June, the College of Education’s (COE) Institute for STEM Education (i2STEMe), which fosters science, technology, engineering and math disciplines and outreach, will host two summer camps that offer middle and high school students the opportunity to expand their minds while having fun.

Eagle Expedition and GenCyber Junior Detectives are returning camps that the Institute has offered in the past and have been very popular with attendees.

“Summer camps with an education and learning focus allow students to get involved in areas they have an interest in but may not get a deep exposure to in school,” said i2STEMe Coordinator Kania Greer, Ed.D. “These summer camps provide a different experience for students than a traditional camp.”

Eagle Expedition will be held June 24-29 at the UGA Marine Education Center on Skidaway Island, Georgia. This unique marine science experience will offer students ages 13-18 the opportunity to learn aspects of oceanography, including marine life and the ecosystems through hands-on field experience. Activities include trawling to collect and catalog marine specimens, river kayaking and marsh transaction.

“Eagle Expedition takes students out of classroom and into the Savannah River,” said Greer. “This camp allows students to spend a week on Skidaway Island and work with faculty and staff as they learn about coastal ecology and science while exploring the wonders of the Georgia coast.”

On June 3-8, i2STEMe will offer middle school students the opportunity to explore the ever-evolving field of cybersecurity at the GenCyber Junior Detectives camp. A residential summer camp, participants will be housed on the Georgia Southern University Statesboro Campus while learning how to protect and defend the nation’s internet from groups and individuals who seek to exploit information networks.

“Students learn about why cyber security is important, and what to do to protect themselves online, as the internet and technology are vital components in today’s society,” said Greer. “This camp takes place on the Statesboro Campus and students become Eagles for a week by living in the dorms, eating in the Dining Commons and engaging with faculty members from a variety of disciplines.”
