Students and Faculty Member Win Silver ADDY AwardStudents and Faculty Member Win Silver ADDY Award
Georgia Southern University students along with one faculty member recently scored a Silver ADDY Award from the Savannah Ad Federation for their work on collateral promotional pieces for the Smith Callaway Banks Southern Folk Art Dedication this past fall.
Those recognized included Leigh C. Thomson, creative director and assistant professor of art at Georgia Southern University; and illustrators Andre Suazo, Austin Harris, Callie Prickett, Kayla Rowan, Herman Dawson and Rachel Rodriguez.
The ADDY Awards are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, recognizing and rewarding creative excellence in the art of advertising. All across the country, local entrants compete for recognition as the best of the best in their respective areas.
The competition begins with a call for entries in late December. Then selection of the most creative entry in each category is effected by a scoring process in which a panel of judges evaluate all creative dimensions of every entry. Entries that are considered outstanding and worthy of recognition receive a Silver ADDY.

Changes to expect with the new phone systemChanges to expect with the new phone system
As Georgia Southern users begin the move to the new Avaya Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone system, they can expect a few changes. The primary differences are two:
• The University will have a new prefix that is the same for everyone. The new prefix is 478 (GSU).
• Internal calls will require dialing a five-digit campus extension. The fifth digit will be the last digit of the prefix.
Are there exceptions? Yes. Some existing phone numbers will remain unchanged; for example, toll free numbers, main campus numbers, and key numbers related to safety and security. Numbers that are critical to the University will be maintained and forwarded to the new system for as long as necessary.
The new telephone system will offer the following top-of-the-line features:
• Improved voicemail.
• Additional functions, including phone conferencing, call waiting, missed call identification, integration with GroupWise, call centers and voice response applications.
Most importantly, training and documentation will be provided for users, and instructional support will be available individually or for user groups.
The telecommunications team and the Eagle Print Shop offer a word of caution to any individual or department obtaining new business cards, new stationary, or other printed items. Your phone number will be changing between now and May, so take that into consideration as you plan for new materials.
When will you get your new phone number? Watch for a timeline in next week’s “This Week.”

PRESENTATIONS

Ocean Leadership Distinguished Lecturer to speak Feb. 28Ocean Leadership Distinguished Lecturer to speak Feb. 28
Sean Gulick, distinguished lecturer for the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, will speak Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. in the College of Information Technology Room 1004. His presentation is titled “One Rock to Change the World: The Story of the Chicxulub Impact Crater.”
Sixty-five million years ago, a meteor traveling with a velocity of close to 20 kilometers per second impacted the Earth near the area known today as the Yucatan Peninsula with energy equivalent to that of 200 atomic bombs. The collision left behind the Chicxulub impact crater. Gulick has been investigating this crater with geophysical methods to understand the role of the impacted rock in the final crater structure, to use the final structure to gain insight into impact cratering processes, and to determine the key characteristics of the impact that contributed to the mass extinction events at the end of the Cretaceous Period.
Sponsored by the Department of Geology and Geography, Gulick’s talk is free and open to the public.

In addition, the festival will include an amateur baking contest for adults and children, a signature dish competition for professional food service providers, a series of specialized cooking classes, a bake sale, and activities for kids.

Missoula Children’s Theater returns in JuneMissoula Children’s Theater returns in June
Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT) returns to the Performing Arts Center for the week of June 16-21. This year's Summer Drama Camp will produce MCT’s version of “Robinson Crusoe.”
This day program has openings for a maximum of 60 students in grades one through high school. Students must have completed kindergarten to attend. Registration is $225 and does not include performance tickets, performance DVD, camp t-shirts, daily lunch or snacks.
MCT, the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, has been touring extensively for more than 30 years from Montana to Japan, and will visit nearly 1,000 communities this year with 32 teams of tour actor/directors. A tour team arrives in a given town with a set, lights, costumes, props and make-up - everything it takes to put on a play, except the cast. The team holds an open audition and casts 50 to 60 local students to perform in the production. The show is rehearsed throughout the week and two public performances are presented on Saturday. All MCT shows are original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairytales with a twist on the classic stories that you know and love. Also included in the residency are three enrichment workshops presented by the tour actor/directors. Creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills and self-esteem are all characteristics that are attained through the participation in this unique, educational project. MCT's mission is the development of lifeskills in children through participation in the performing arts.
