Center for Online Learning takes shapeCenter for Online Learning takes shape
As Georgia Southern University continues to develop its online programs, the institution is adding the Center for Online Learning (COL). The COL will support the University’s move to offer more degrees online by setting high standards for online course design and delivery. The COL assists academic units on campus to build courses that support online programs. The mission of the COL is to promote quality online courses. The COL is working in conjunction with the Emerging Technology Center, the Center for Excellence in Teaching and others within each College.
The staff at the COL is striving to achieve best practices, based on research, for effective online course design, teaching strategies and learning strategies. These best practices include course structure, communication and assessment. Each unit on campus that intends to put entire degrees/programs online needs to have dialog between administration and its faculty to discuss certain issues about course development. These issues include standard Vista template and consistency across courses in a program to benefit students and faculty. The COL will assist academic units on campus to build the courses that support online programs.
The COL Web site provides more in-depth information regarding online pedagogy and quality assurance and more. Another aspect of their Web site is SOLO, Student Online Learning Orientation, that provides a complete guide to taking online courses at Georgia Southern.
The COL is staffed by Robby Ambler, David Lloyd and Raleigh Way. Their offices are located in the Nessmith-Lane Building.
For more information, visit http://academics.georgiasouthern.edu/col or call ext. 5555.
Move to new phone system begins in MarchMove to new telephone system begins this weekend
Georgia Southern University will enter Phase One of its change to the Avaya VoIP telephone system this weekend, March 7-9. The following campus buildings will be part of this weekend’s “cutover”:

Hanner Complex
Parrish Football Center
Iron Works Building
Wiggins Baseball Building
Clements Baseball Center
Alumni House

Beginning Monday morning, March 10, telephone numbers for these buildings will use the 478 prefix; however, their four-digit extension number will remain the same. The phased cutover process will continue through May 12.

Internal (intra-campus) calls require special attention:
• If you have an old number and are calling someone with a 478 prefix, you will need to dial 9 and the complete number, just as if you were making an outside call.
• If you have a 478 prefix and are dialing someone with an old number, you will have to dial 9 and the complete number, just as if you were making an outside call.
• If you have a 478 prefix and are dialing someone with a 478 prefix, you will only need to dial “8” and their four-digit extension.

Telephone numbers in the University’s Web directory <http://directory.georgiasouthern.edu/> will be updated as the cutovers occur. Individual Human Resources information will be updated with new numbers, at the same time updating information for the Eagle Alert system.

As the entire campus moves to the new system, previous telephone numbers will have an automated message that provides callers with the new campus number (e.g. “This number has been changed. The new number is 478-XXXX”). Even after the new system is completed, messages will be available for a year.

As each building moves to the new telephone system, training sessions will be offered. Please check with your administrative secretary for the time and place of training.

Telecommunications will also provide tutorials on how to reconfigure voice mail in the new system.
Once your department has been moved to the new telephone system, please review all your department’s Web pages and update the telephone numbers that have changed.

For questions, call the Telecommunications Office at ext. 5000.

Chance, Rittschof complete Six Sigma Green Belt trainingChance, Rittschof complete
Six Sigma Green Belt training

Cindi Chance, dean of the College of Education, and Kent Rittschof, associate professor of Curriculum, Foundations, and Reading, recently completed Green Belt training in the Board of Regents’ Lean Six Sigma Project. The aim of the project is to increase accessibility, flexibility and convenience in USG collaborative online programs for teachers by providing better, faster and more cost effective services while maintaining program quality.
The training included a series of two-day workshops, with each workshop followed by a specific application to a real-world challenge. For Chance, Rittschof and representatives from other USG institutions who have been participating in this project since last spring, the challenge is developing online initial teacher preparation programs in the areas of math education and science education. Their assignment is in direct response to the shortage of math and science teachers across Georgia.
Lean Six Sigma is a business improvement method that combines tools from both Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma. Lean manufacturing focuses on speed, and traditional Six Sigma focuses on quality. Combining the two has yielded better quality faster.
Lean Six Sigma methodology will be used as a tool to maximize value and achieve customer satisfaction by developing strategies to streamline admissions, registration, and financial aid processes for USG collaborative MAT/M.Ed./Ed.S programs available through GeorgiaONmyLINE.org. Lean Six Sigma is a statewide Chancellor’s initiative to make higher education more effective and more efficient.
“Lean Six Sigma is not new to those of us who have been trained in school reform,” said Chance. “We are trained to find the root cause of a problem instead of responding to a symptom. Attending the workshops for Lean Six Sigma validates what we’ve been doing in school reform and how we’ve been teaching about school reform.”

Missoula Children’s Theater returns in JuneMissoula Children’s Theater returns in June
Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT) returns to the Performing Arts Center for the week of June 16-21. This year's Summer Drama Camp will produce MCT’s version of “Robinson Crusoe.”
This day program has openings for a maximum of 60 students in grades one through high school. Students must have completed kindergarten to attend. Registration is $225 and does not include performance tickets, performance DVD, camp t-shirts, daily lunch or snacks.
MCT, the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, has been touring extensively for more than 30 years from Montana to Japan, and will visit nearly 1,000 communities this year with 32 teams of tour actor/directors. A tour team arrives in a given town with a set, lights, costumes, props and make-up - everything it takes to put on a play, except the cast. The team holds an open audition and casts 50 to 60 local students to perform in the production. The show is rehearsed throughout the week and two public performances are presented on Saturday. All MCT shows are original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairytales with a twist on the classic stories that you know and love. Also included in the residency are three enrichment workshops presented by the tour actor/directors. Creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills and self-esteem are all characteristics that are attained through the participation in this unique, educational project. MCT's mission is the development of lifeskills in children through participation in the performing arts.
For registration information, visit the camp Web site at http://ceps.georgiasouthern.edu/conted/campdrama.html.
