| Ismail M. Basha, assistant professor in the Department
of Construction Management and Civil Engineering Technology, is
the recipient of the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) National
Teaching Award. The National Teaching Award recognizes contributions
to construction education, excellence in teaching, and dedication
to the construction profession. |
| Kathleen Comerford, associate professor of history,
presented a paper at the 54th annual Renaissance Society of America
Conference April 3-7 in Chicago. The paper, “Jesuit Foundations
and Medici Power,” is part of Comerford’s new research
project, begun in earnest last semester during her educational leave. |
| Horst Kurz, professor of German, presented “Der
Mörder ist (nicht) immer der Gärtner--Krimi im Deutschkurs”
and “Volkslieder in der Deutschklasse?” at the annual
conference of the Foreign Language Association of Georgia in Augusta,
Ga., on March 1. He was invited to participate on March 30 in a
roundtable on the teaching of German culture and language at colleges
and universities in Georgia at a meeting held in conjunction with
the national symposium “The Meaning of Culture: German Studies
in the 21st Century.” On April 4, he discussed “Spielend
Sprechen” at the 2008 Southern Conference on Language Teaching
meeting held in Myrtle Beach, S.C. |
| Gustavo Molina, associate professor, and Youakim
Kalaani, assistant professor, both in the Department of
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology, presented the
paper “Integration of Distance Learning Technology into Traditional
Engineering Physical Laboratory Exercises” at the annual conference
of the American Society of Engineering Education, Southeast Section.
The conference was held April 6-8 in Memphis, Tenn. The paper was
co-authored with colleagues at Georgia Tech Savannah and Armstrong
Atlantic State University. Additionally at the conference, Molina
presented his paper “Algorithm Insight and Math Manipulation
Abilities: A Review.” |
| Laura B. Regassa, associate professor in the
Department of Biology, recently accepted the position of President-elect
for the Southeastern Branch of the American Society for Microbiology
(ASM), which includes microbiologists from Alabama, Florida and
Georgia. At the November 2007 ASM meeting in Alabama, Regassa’s
student C. Ryan Bates (NSF REU fellow) won second place for his
presentation titled “Growth profiles of novel Spiroplasma
species isolated from geographically diverse tabanid hosts.”
This presentation was co-authored by three other students (Perez
[NSF REU fellow], Rosenberg [COUR recipient], and Young) and professor
emeritus of biology F.E. French. Bates was given research funding
and a travel award by the association. Regassa gave two invited
talks at Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia) in December titled “Global
diversity and evolution of Spiroplasma bacteria”
and “Inquiry-based molecular biology education and student
learning.” Regassa was co-author on a recent paper titled
“New Species and U.S. Species of Spiroplasma in the
Costa Rican Highlands: Implications for Biogeography and Biodiversity”
published in Biodiversity and Conservation (16: 3877-3894). |
| Michael Reksulak, assistant professor of economics,
writes a bi-weekly column on business and economics in the Savannah
Morning News. His latest column included results from a recent
survey on financial literacy and also suggested what would, probably,
be the best use for the forthcoming tax rebate checks. The column

presented his paper “Chile in the Age of Globalization: New
Immigration and the City.” at the Sixth Biennial Florida International
University Conference on Spanish and Latin American Cultural Studies
March 6-8. |
| Phil Waldrop, professor in the Department of
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology, is an invited
speaker on the subject of metallic composites at the April 15 TechTuesday
meeting of the National Nanotechnology Manufacturing Center. He
also had a peer-reviewed paper accepted for presentation and publication
at the June 2008 conference of the American Society for Engineering
Education and two paper abstracts accepted for the November 2008
conference of the National Association of Industrial Technology.
The latter abstracts have also been accepted and full papers invited
for peer review by the International Journal of Modern Engineering. |
| Denise Weems, assistant professor in the Department
of Teaching and Learning, presented the participatory workshop “The
Big Picture: Using Children’s Literature to Teach Art”
at the National Art Education Association Annual Convention March
26-30 in New Orleans. |
