National Youth-At-Risk Conference set for March 5-8 in Savannah

Georgia Southern University’s College of Education and The Division of Continuing Education will host the 28th annual National Youth-At-Risk Conference March 5-8 at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah.

This year’s theme, “Helping Adults Serve Youth,” complements the conference’s goal of training adults who serve youth to create safe, healthy, caring and intellectually empowering educational environments that foster the wellbeing of all children and adolescents.

More than 1,200 attendees from across the United States are expected for the conference, which will feature three keynote speakers and more than 120 presentations by nationally and internationally recognized presenters.

In these presentations, participants learn about current research-based educational programs and strategies, which empower young people to overcome at-risk conditions that may threaten their safety, health, emotional needs and academic achievement.

This year’s keynote speakers include: Manny Scott, an Original Freedom Writer who will speak on “The Power of One: Reaching the Unreachable Youth.” Alan Sitomer, California Teacher of the Year, will present, “Bringing Rigorous Learning to Life: Having Your Academic Cake and Eating It, Too!” Finally, Joanne Billingsley, an award-winning teacher and author will present, “Unleashing a Mindset of Achievement.” More information on keynote speakers can be found here.

During the conference, participants also can expect to gain knowledge of proactive solutions and best practices for meeting the serious challenges faced by youth today such as: school violence, poverty, learning difficulties, illiteracy, boredom, apathy, misbehavior, dropout, drugs, bullying, gangs, teen pregnancy, sexual harassment, racism and more. Furthermore, participants gain effective educational tools to build strong caring schools, communities and families, which can meet the diverse needs of all young people.
