Georgia entrepreneur to speak on non-profit New Story, to battle slums internationally

Georgia native and social entrepreneur Matthew Marshall will share his experiences fighting homelessness internationally on Tuesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center, 874 Plant Drive.

“We’re thrilled to have Matthew Marshall on campus to demonstrate how young social entrepreneurs can tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems,” said Chris Caplinger, Ph.D., director of First-Year Experience. “Marshall’s message is certain to inspire and motivate.”

Marshall is a Y Combinator graduate and World Economic Forum Global Shaper. He was recently named a 2016 Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur.

Marshall is co-founder and head of product for New Story, a nonprofit that builds safe homes and transforms slums into sustainable communities. Since its founding in 2015, New Story has crowdfunded more than 800 homes in Haiti, El Salvador and Bolivia.

New Story’s success is driven by an innovative approach to building houses for those in need by connecting donors to those they help. All gifts support a specific family, and when construction is complete, donors receive a video of the family they helped to fund moving into their new home.

Marshall’s lecture is sponsored by First-Year Experience, the Center for Sustainability, Leadership and Community Engagement and International Programs and Services. It is part of both the Global Engagement Series and the Sustainability Seminar Series. This event is free and open to the public.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit questions for Marshall by Sunday, March 26 at http://bit.ly/2n4Petu.
