Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus in Savannah to host annual Awards Convocation on April 19

Georgia Southern’s Armstrong Campus will host its annual Awards Convocation ceremony on April 19 to recognize outstanding achievement for the 2017-2018 school year. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Savannah Ballroom of the Armstrong Campus Student Union, with a reception immediately following.

More than 50 high-achieving students will be honored during the ceremony when both departmental and campus-wide awards will be presented.

“The Annual Awards Convocation is more than just an opportunity for faculty to recognize student success,” said Department of History Professor Michael Hall, Ph.D., who will serve as a presenter. “It provides a venue for students to bring their friends and family to see their hard work recognized by the faculty.”

Among the highlights of the evening will be the presentation of the Outstanding Honors Student Award, which is bestowed on an honors student who best exemplifies exceptional academic achievement as well as distinguished service to the Honors Program and beyond.

The Joseph A. Buck Award is presented to a graduating senior student who has held one or more leadership positions on the Armstrong Campus, is highly respected by students, faculty and staff, and represents the qualities of leadership and citizenship that stand for the best of Armstrong Campus.

The Post 9/11 Veteran Academic Achievement Award recognizes the student-veteran who, having served honorably in our nation’s military during the period following Sept. 11, 2001, demonstrated commitment to his or her education by attaining the highest cumulative grade point average among graduating veterans.

Near the end of the evening the presentation of Armstrong Campus’ oldest and most prestigious award, the Silver “A” Awards will take place. The Silver “A” medallion represents outstanding achievement in academics or service to the University and is worn by recipients as part of their graduation regalia. On rare occasions, when a student earns both the service and academic honors, he or she is awarded a Gold “A” Award.

The final award of the evening will be the Bhatia Foundation Award. Established in 2012, the award is presented to a student that must also be a recipient of either the Silver “A” Award or the Gold “A” Award. In keeping with the objectives of the Bhatia Foundation, the recipient will be a graduate who is focused on the betterment of humankind and the promotion of friendship and goodwill for all cultures.
