Georgia Southern to host 18th annual National Cross-Cultural Counseling and Education Conference for Research, Action and Change

Yamonte Cooper, Ed.D., a licensed professional clinical counselor, will headline the 18th annual National Cross-Cultural Counseling and Education Conference for Research, Action and Change, which is hosted by the Georgia Southern University College of Education. The conference will be at the Georgia Tech Savannah Campus Feb. 8 through 9.

Cooper’s presentation, “The Sunken Place: Racism & Trauma — The Impacts on African-American Men,” will provide insight into the internalization of negative racial bias.

Cooper is a national certified counselor and an American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists certified sex therapist. He also serves as an associate professor of counseling at El Camino College, an adjunct professor of human sexuality at the California Institute of Integral Studies and an adjunct professor of clinical psychology at Antioch University.

In addition to Cooper and other speakers, Roslyn Caldwell, Ph.D., an expert on clinical and forensic psychology, specifically as it relates to multiculturalism, will be the William Cross Jr., Lecture Series Speaker. The series is a distinguished tradition in honor of William Cross Jr., Ph.D., author of Shades of Black, a classic in the discourse on Black identity.

Caldwell is also the co-creator and director of the Bakari Mentoring Program, an intervention and prevention program adapted from the Bakari Project, originally developed by Thomas A. Parham 20 years ago to cultivate socially conscious young men and women.

The conference will end with “Black Identity and Individual Difference,” a workshop by Cross that explores the misconception that there is only one way to be black.
