He played his last PGA Tour event in 1996 when he retired and opened a thoroughbred horse breeding business in his native Kentucky.

Mudd, who turned 50 in April, was a two-time USGA Public Links champion, and a college All-American at Georgia Southern. In 1982, he finished the Masters as low amateur and turned pro.

Mudd was on the PGA Tour for 14 seasons, winning four tournaments from 1988-1990. His biggest win was at The Players Championship in 1990 at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. At the end of that year he won the Nabisco Championships, which is now the Tour Championship.
