“True Blue” Palate

Recent graduate Will Guy (’13) can add author to his resume. The former Georgia Southern student spent his last semester on campus going to class, cramming for exams and finding time to write a cookbook, which launched as an e-book on Cyber Monday 2013. “The idea to write the book came from a friend who asked me for a few recipes so he could make a meal to impress a girl,” Guy said. “I told him how to make curry chicken stew over jasmine rice served with a fresh garden salad and citrus Thai chili vinaigrette. My friend later suggested I write my recipes down and share them with fellow students.”

Guy, who hails from suburban Atlanta, ran with the idea and sought the advice of a publisher who attends his hometown church. He ultimately wrote The Audacity to Cook, which not only offers simple recipes but also provides basic tips on how to measure ingredients, and what kitchen tools and food staples to keep on hand. The young author said online sales have been impressive but he plans to roll out some printed copies this year. “My goal is to get Georgia Southern students to buy it and tell their friends. With social media making things move so fast, I am sure we will get the word out about my book.”

The 69-page cookbook has a collection of easy-to-follow recipes to suit the palate of most students, including a chapter that features vegetarian dishes. In the chapter titled “5 Days until Payday, I’m Starving and only got $20,” Guy shows students how to whip up tasty meals using leftovers and very little money. His favorite recipe is in the first chapter, “Who’s Counting Calories?”

“The Nasty Dawg is not your ordinary hot dog,” the 21-year-old said. “It is wrapped in bacon, dipped in beer batter, deep-fried and topped with chili, cheese, diced onions, jalapenos and Doritos chips. It’s messy but delicious.”

After graduating in December, Guy began his restaurant management internship at the Emory University Conference Center in Atlanta. He credits Georgia Southern with putting him firmly on the path toward achieving his dream of opening his own restaurant one day.

“I have to say that Georgia Southern was definitely the right choice for me and not just academically. I’ve made countless connections and memories…‘True Blue’ is tattooed in my heart where nothing can ever replace it.”

Perhaps sometime soon, Guy’s recipes will be etched in our stomachs as well. – Sandra Bennett
