Beating the Heat on Campus this Summer

The forecast calls for some pretty high temperatures in Statesboro in the coming weeks. And while we at Georgia Southern can become acclimated fairly well to the heat, it never hurts to think of ways to stay cool.
  • Take a dip
    • A quick way to cool off is to grab your swimsuit and head to the Bruce and Kathryn Grube Recreation Activity Center (RAC) to take a dip in one of the pools. Not only will you cool off, you can burn some calories, too. Just be sure to wear sunscreen if you’re outside.
  • Take study breaks inside
    • While we love to see students study on Sweetheart Circle and enjoy the beautiful campus, try to take advantage of cool study areas like the Russell Union, Zach S. Henderson Library or common areas in academic buildings.
  • Sip on something cool
    • It’s important to stay hydrated in this kind of heat. Grabbing lunch in Dining Commons? Grab a smoothie or eat some fresh fruit like watermelon. Walking through the Russell Union? Try an iced or frozen coffee from Starbucks, a lemonade from Chick-fil-A or just fill up your cup with water.
  • Find some shade
    • If you must be outside, try to find a nice shady spot and remember fill up that water bottle.
  • Avoid Hats
    • While it’s cool to channel your inner Cole Swindell with the “GS” cap, wearing hats can actually make you hotter. Since you release a great deal of body heat from your head, wearing a hat keeps the heat closer to your body.
  • Wear light colors and loose clothing
    • We love to see folks sporting their True Blue spirit by wearing blue, but if you’re planning to be outside, opt for lighter fabrics and a loose fit. Light-colored fabrics reflect rather than absorb light, and loose clothing can help you feel cooler.
