Amanda Townley, Ph.D., elected president of National Association of Biology Teachers

Amanda Townley, Ph.D.

Associate Professor of Science Education and Provost Faculty Research Fellow Amanda Townley, Ph.D., was recently elected president of the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT).

The elected position as president includes three years of service during which Townley will serve as president-elect, president and past president.

“As a representative of Georgia Southern University and the College of Education, I am thrilled to be a voice for life science teachers across levels as the organization serves life science teachers and professors from K-12 as well as two- and four-year universities,” Townley said. “The College of Education here has a long-standing tradition of excellence in teacher education as well as ongoing partnerships with, and support for, the communities we serve. Having the opportunity to carry that tradition to the national level to support and serve as an advocate for all teachers in the life sciences is a privilege. What I will enjoy most is being able to share a little piece of that Georgia Southern ‘Eagle Educator’ connection, passion and persistence with teachers around the United States.”

In her role, Townley will serve as a member of the Board of Directors for the organization as well as a member of the Executive Committee, helping with administration of the organization’s affairs. NABT meets throughout the year to discuss policies and legislation surrounding life science education around the United States as well as current issues and the needs of its members.

Each year of service also includes specific responsibilities at the NABT national conference and leading up to the conference, including things like recommending and vetting speakers, determinations regarding special awards, presiding over the honors luncheon, developing position statements and responses, representing 40,000 life science teachers in a variety of external settings, and presenting other special recognition such as the Outstanding Biology Teacher awards, among others.

NABT is the leader in life science education across levels from K-12 through graduate studies and represents more than 40,000 life science teachers and professors in the United States.
