Georgia Southern University’s Herty Advanced Materials Development Center (AMDC) welcomed Georgia Governor Nathan Deal to the Savannah, Ga., facility for a 75th anniversary celebration. Herty was established by the state of Georgia to provide research and development support to the pulp and paper industry, and it has since become a world leader in materials research and product development.



Georgia Southern University hosted its 85th annual spring commencement during two ceremonies, awarding a record number of degrees to more than 3,000 students.

Theoretical physicist Dr. Michio Kaku served as the graduate commencement speaker in Hanner Fieldhouse. The following day, Luis Aguilar (’76), a commissioner on the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, addressed a crowd of more than 20,000 people in Allen E. Paulson Stadium for the undergraduate ceremony.



Eagle fans arrived for an exciting weekend of Georgia Southern Athletics, capped off by the Blue-White football game, an annual inter-squad exhibition. This year’s game, however, was a mixture of football and film: a film crew arrived to shoot crowd shots for “Erk,” a biopic about the life of legendary football coach Erk Russell. Georgia Southern alumni Beau Turpin and James Kicklighter are producing and directing the film.



Sweetheart Circle was the setting for a celebration of the visual and performing arts during ArtsFest, a springtime festival sponsored by the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art. Visitors of all ages had a chance to create their own art, buy one-of-a-kind treasures and enjoy cultural performances during this annual tradition on campus.
